The Year 3 Discovery Centre promotes student agency, giving our students voice, and often choice, in their learning and provides an opportunity to promote innovation that can be transferred to other parts of the school.

The innovation lab is used for animation, science experiments, 3D printing and robotics. It is also home to a kitchen garden program that allows our students to develop skills that can then be transferred to the Year 4 and 5 program at our SFPS campus. Integrating specialist areas into core subjects allows for richer and deeper learning experiences.

A performing arts hall is used for assemblies, movie making and also houses three sound proof private instrumental music studios. The design, incorporating professional lighting, projection facilities, green screen and shadow screen, allows for digital production and performance, and seats up to 100 people. A comprehensive instrumental music program is offered to all students enrolled at the Discovery Centre.

Students contribute to the running of the campus in real and tangible ways, such as running their own cafe each week, and researching and selecting the charities to receive the proceeds from this venture. This hones a range of skills. Students will further develop numeracy skills in an applied setting, along with an understanding of nutrition, customer service and teamwork. 

Small group workshops run two days per week where students engage in a range of learning experiences. These workshops are intentional and structured, with teachers allocating workshop groups. Through these workshops we aim to provoke curiosity, as well as build skills and knowledge across a range of learning areas. These also provide opportunities for us to foster relationships between members of our community, and proactively strengthen social skills. 

The Year 3 students also have opportunities for collaboration and leadership beyond the year level with older and younger students on the other campuses as well as with our Little Learners and kinder children at FKI. 

Technology, already integrated seamlessly into the primary curriculum, has an ever stronger focus, with students exposed to a wider range of technologies and innovative applications for them. Exemplifying this is a recent film festival run by the students, showcasing the learning from their Space Inquiry into space.

Jewish Life permeates throughout the Discovery Centre with both formal and informal programs taking place on site. The focus on using Hebrew at the Discovery Centre is another hallmark of a Scopus education. The learning of Hebrew is enhanced with some general studies lessons incorporating Hebrew vocabulary. Increasing the amount of spoken and heard Ivrit further anchors our students with their heritage and culture, and reinforces Hebrew as a living language.

The landscaped gardens and playgrounds have informal seating for students, a pizza oven and BBQ. The animal enclosure for our pets are looked after by students. The outdoor spaces also include an oval with a running track and a complex ropes playground that will challenge all children, alongside casual seating areas and room to explore. 

Students are further encouraged to engage in physical activity, an essential element of wellbeing, through our early morning activities, available at no extra cost from 7.50am every morning.

Focusing on creativity and opportunity, leadership and collaboration, the Discovery Centre will open up the minds of our students to create the leaders of the future.
